The 1,200-ton MV Rachel Corrie, an Irish aid ship, was seized by the Israeli Naval Forces, as it attempted to challenge the blockade of Gaza. It was seized in international waters, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Gaza’s shore.

The military said its forces boarded ship from the sea, not helicopters and didn’t meet any resistance. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said: “No contact has yet been made with the kidnapped passengers but we have learned that they have been taken to Holon detention centre where they could be deported as early as tonight.”

Passengers include Irishman Dennis Halliday, a former assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Northern Irish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire, and a group of Irish and Malaysian pro-Palestinian activists.

The ship, named in honor of American peace activist Rachel Corrie, contains support including: toys, school supplies, wheelchairs, medical equipment and cement, a material that Israel has restricted from entry into Gaza. The crew had rejected an offer to unload its cargo in Israel and accompany it across the border.

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign initially organised the ship. Jenny Graham, a Free Gaza Movement (FGM) activist, assured that everything aboard the ship had been inspected in Ireland. A FGM activist Greta Berlin, based in Cyprus, said: “We are an initiative to break Israel’s blockade of 1.5 million people in Gaza. Our mission has not changed and this is not going to be the last flotilla.”

This comes after the death of nine activists when Israeli commandos raided the ‘Gaza Freedom Flotilla’ that planned to breach the Gaza blockade.

Desktop memory or RAM (random-access memory) is a factor that is often over looked when buying a desktop computer. It s often found that people are more concerned with other components such as the size of the hard drive and the processor or the graphics card.

While each of these are important in their own right, the size of the desktop memory should hold greater priority. But not only is it a greater priority, it also requires greater understanding. So here is a short guide of five basic things that should be known about desktop memory:

It is not a storage component: The word memory often tricks people into assuming that desktop memory is something that files can be saved to, in a similar way to which a hard drive operates. It doesn t. Desktop memory runs transiently with the computer, meaning that once the computer is switched off the desktop memory is erased. This means that everything stored on the RAM is lost and cannot be recovered. So it is crucial to stress the importance of saving work on a regular basis to an internal hard drive.

It helps with the running of software: Software is run on the computer using the RAM. It acts as immediate storage space to help with running – programs. The kind of desktop memory requirements needed to run specific programs can usually be found on the box. Realistically for software to run at a comfortable rate, more RAM than the highest minimum is needed. For example a program may require 256MB (megabytes) of desktop memory to operate; it will operate at the standard, expected rate. But the same software will operate at an optimised rate on a computer with 500MB of desktop memory. It s recommended now to have a desktop memory of about 4GB (gigabytes).

There are two types of basic memory: The two types of basic memory most widely used are DDR2 (double data rate 2) and DDR3 (double data rate 3). DDR2 allows for higher data bus speed but requires less power by running the internal data clock at a quarter of the speed that the data bus is run at. The highest rated DDR2 desktop memory modules allow transfer rates which at its maximum is 3200MB s.

DDR3 runs at a much faster rate (twice that of its predecessor, the DDR2) and can be found more frequently in newer computers. This particular RAM access interface allows for a maximum memory module size of 16GB.

Desktop memory can be easily upgraded: Most desktop computers have four to six memory modules. These are usually installed in pairs, though in newer computers it is not uncommon to find them installed in threes for better performance. For example, a RAM system may contain 6GB of memory with four memory slots. Therefore this desktop memory amount could be installed in either three 2GB memory modules or six 1GB modules. Depending on the amount of slots already in use and those that are free, it would be quite easy to boost the amount of memory by just adding an extra module.

The technology used in RAM interfaces is always upgrading: Therefore what might have been new and cutting edge a year ago probably isn t now. So it s worth noting how much memory is needed to operate the latest software, so that it can be run at its optimal settings.

At first it may seem daunting, but with research desktop memory isn t really as complicated as first impressions may make it seem.

Quarterback Brett Favre has been traded to the New York Jets for a conditional fourth-round draft selection in the 2009 NFL Draft. The trade was later confirmed by ESPN and the Jets themselves. The multiple National Football League record-holder was the starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers from 1992 to the end of the 2007 NFL season. Favre, 38, announced his retirement on March 6, 2008 after much speculation over his future.

After a long dispute with the Packers’ management, Favre was reinstated by the NFL and was pursued in trade discussions with the Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Jets were much more aggressive than the Buccaneers in their pursuit of Favre all along, offering a conditional fourth-round draft choice in the 2009 NFL Draft which could be promoted to a first-round selection based on performance criteria.

“Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished,” the Packers said in a press release. Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said of the trade, “We just felt like this was an opportunity to go get somebody of Brett’s stature and what he’s accomplished.”

The trade caps a roller-coaster off-season ride for Favre and the franchise that became synonymous with his legendary No. 4 jersey, which was planned to be retired in the Packers’ home opening game. Favre’s on-again, off-again retirement has monopolized headlines for the past two months as news began trickling to the media that the legendary passer was second-guessing both his retirement decision and his status in Green Bay. Favre was offered a $20 million dollar marketing contract from the Packers to remain retired.

Now, the Jets may have to clear cap space in order to have Favre on their roster — who is due to make $12 million this season — which may call for the release of Chad Pennington. A comment from Jets GM Tannenbaum all but confirmed the release of Pennington. “It’s a bittersweet moment for us. I have all the respect in the world for Chad as a person, as a player,” Tannenbaum said, adding that an announcement on a transaction involving Pennington will come later Thursday.

The Packer’s official website states that they will be holding press conferences at noon and 2:00 p.m. CDT and more information will be released then.

Finland and Canada — The Northern European country of Finland was named among the world’s most healthy, according to an investigation by the London-based newspaper, The Guardian. According to health experts, Finland joins Canada as having the distinction of being home to the lowest percentage of “couch potato” citizens among developed nations.

Pekka Puska, Director of Finland’s National Institute of Public Health claimed that in the 1970s, the country held the world record for heart disease. “Finnish men used to say that vegetables were for rabbits and not for men,” he said, “and the staple foods were bread and butter, fatty meat and full-fat milk!”

When the Finnish government found out the figures in the 1970s, it began a campaign to make a healthier nation. The number of males dying of heart problems has, over the past 35 years, decreased by 65 percent, and lung cancer deaths have also dropped dramatically.

Other nations are now considering using similar tactics as the Finnish government to make their own countries more healthy, but some say it is yet another example of a “nanny state.”

Cosmetic surgery is no longer a new concept. With more and more people now undergoing plastic surgery to firm their skin, lift their breasts and tuck their tummies, the idea of physical enhancement is no longer surprising. The fact that technology has managed to advance over the years have only made this industry booming, allowing more people to undergo operation without any of the usual health risks.

However, that does not mean that you should jump into this type of medical bandwagon as soon as possible. Despite the low risk, patients would still need to be very careful when setting themselves up for a plastic surgery. As much as possible, you should take the time to research various plastic surgeons in the area and choose the doctor with the best record for the procedure you intend to undergo.

Patients are advised to first have a good long talk with their chosen surgeon regarding the procedure. Ask vital questions such as how long the surgery would take, what is the recovery time and how the result would eventually look. Plastic surgeons often utilize software images to show patients what would be done during the procedure and how it would end up after the required recovery period.

Do not be afraid to quiz the plastic surgeon. Asking them questions will let you know just how competent they are for the job. Also, ask them about their work history and how long they have been in practice. Give them the chance to talk about previous surgeries and inquire about their success rate. More importantly, ask for their certificate or qualifications and quiz them about their insurance policy should there be any risk with the operation.

Note that the plastic surgeon is not the only professional that should be consulted about this type of operation. Your general physician should also be noted about your cosmetic plan, especially if you are suffering from specific health conditions. By doing this, you can direct your GP into communicating with the person that would be performing the procedure and advise them on the items that you may or may not be exposed to.

For example, some people may be allergic to specific drugs required during the operation. With this information, the surgeon would be able to obtain a substitute drug for the process. This way, the attending specialist can still get the results needed but without putting the client at risk.

If you are already sure of what medical enhancement you intend to undergo, try to read up about it through online sources. You could also try talking with people who have already undergone the procedure and could therefore tell you how the experience was for them. This should provide an accurate description of how it would feel after the surgery.

With the excellent advancements in technology today, undergoing cosmetic surgery today is no longer the health risk it once was. However, that does not mean that you should not be careful. Some risks are still involved, which is why you should take the time to prepare and choose the best surgeon that could take your case. This way, you can be sure to get the type of body you need without being exposed to the risk.

The international forces in East Timor have reached an agreement about the coordination of the military and police forces in the field. Representatives of the four countries reached the agreement during an urgent meeting after an incident between Australian and Portuguese soldiers yesterday.

In the agreement reached between Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Portugal and the Timorese government, operational autonomy is given to the international forces, which will operate in cooperation and coordination with each other.

The agreement also stated that in an initial phase Dili will be divided into sectors, and each area will be under the control of an international force. Outside of its area of responsibility, the military or police force will only be able to operate if other international forces request their actions. Also was agreed that the police forces will assume total control of the city after the military forces leave their current occupied positions. A situation that is expected after the arrival of the remaining equipment, mainly vehicles, for the Portuguese Republican National Guard (GNR) and the arrival of the remaining Malaysian police officers and their equipment.

In an official notice, the Timorese Foreign Minister, José Ramos Horta stated that “the objective on a long run is for the GNR to operate has a tactical intervention force in all the city of Dili”.

Ramos Horta explained that “in the next days, maybe already tomorrow morning, they [the Australian, Malaysian, New Zealand and Portuguese forces] will do some coordination training, in way to assure that the four forces know exactly what each one will do”. “Since some are from the Army and the others [Portuguese Republican National Guard] are a specialized police and that they never worked together, its useful to carry out some practical exercises”, he added.

In another subject, Ramos Horta explained that the Australian soldiers that are in Maubisse, next to a rebel group lead by major Reinado, and in Gleno, Ermera, next to another group of “military opponents”, are there “containing those elements”.

“Those groups are not comparable with other people that are here in Dili and that must be disarmed”, Ramos Horta said.

“The Australian presence in Maubisse and Gleno aims in containing those groups on their areas, until arrives the moment in which the President decides that is time for also mister Alfredo Reinado and the others to put down their weapons”, he said. “This is not urgent because they are not causing problems to anyone”, he justified.

The urgency of the resolution and clarification of the command and cooperation of the international forces was originated after an incident between Australian and Portuguese soldiers. When yesterday a Portuguese GNR patrol transported three people to a temporary detention center managed by Australian soldiers.

The detainees were arrested by a GNR Special Operations team, after being caught looting a governmental warehouse, in Balide, Dili.

The Australian soldiers then refused to receive the detained men, questioning the legitimacy of the Portuguese soldiers to make arrests. The Portuguese contingent transported the detainees to the Timorese prison services in Dili.

A younger brother of Chechen warlord Doku Umarov is the latest of around 120 rebels whom have surrendered in the Russian republic Chechnya alone since an amnesty was declared following last month’s killing of rebel leader Shamil Basayev.

In an attempt to capitalize on Basayev’s death and other recent successful developments in Russia’s long struggle against Chechen separatists, Russian authorities instigated an amnesty that reached out to all insurgents of the Russian North Caucasus area who would lay down their weapons in exchange for peace. Previous amnesties showed only lacklustre success but it is hoped the current situation and declining popularity of the separatist groups within Chechnya will lend this latest attempt more success. The amnesty initially valid until August 1 was later extended until September 30.

Doku Umarov however rejected the amnesty as “a hopeless attempt by the Kremlin regime to shroud the real situation […] in lies”. After the death of Shamil Basayev, Doku Umarov is considered the most influential separatist. A previous report that it was Doku Umarov himself, who had surrendered has been denied.

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.
