Some Thoughts on My Toddler s Prized Print Blanket

by

Tammy Rich

A child s focus on an object such as a print blanket often alarms parents. But it may be viewed as a transitional phase of independence. Sometimes the item signifies replacing mom always being around as she was during pregnancy. Familiarity of the item s presence may give a feeling of security to the tot.

To a small child, it may appear that parents, older siblings, friends and relatives are trying to exert control. Hearing the word no or you cannot do this or do not touch that constantly helps create a negative environment for the child. Of course parents are too often surprised to find the toddler abusing his cherished toy or print blanket on a regular basis. The abuse is probably about control. Frustration is all too often the source of crying fits, anger and generally bad behavior for a child who does not possess the ability to reason and work through situations. Short attention span also contributes to the situation.

By stepping on, throwing or hitting the print blanket, the child may simply be mimicking his environment of negativity. Positive reinforcement, as has been preached by many professionals, truly does help this type of situation. Consider praising the tot for exhibiting good behavior rather than focusing on bad behavior and using negative language. Everyone prefers to clap and cheer rather than crying and being sent to time out. Focusing on something so simple as desiring to be a big boy or girl may do wonders for their ego and your demeanor.

By providing the child several print blankets rotated on a regular basis, he will become accustomed to the smell and feel of a freshly laundered item. Additionally, there is no down time without the print blanket due to wash and dry time. And no associated crying fits. Try not to push the youngster to give up the toy or blanket until they are ready. It would be synonymous to attempting to potty train a one year old and probably would entail disastrous results. Consider rewarding the child for voluntarily surrendering the print blanket for short periods of time.

When an older child is struggling with giving up a beloved item, creative parents may find success by inventing a unique way to assist the child. For instance, donating the print blanket to a needy child may give the child resolution. Someone else needs the blankets more than the child does. But reasoning skills are necessary for this type of resolution. Other creative parents assisted their child with making multiple blankets so even more less fortunate children would be able to have the security of an item they would otherwise not be able to afford. The main point is not to become overly upset when the time comes for your small tot to carry their security print blanket. Assisting the tot through the cycle of this transitional time is better met with positive answers to their dilemma. Some adults still sleep with their print blanket or that beloved animal. Security is a wonderful thing to have however it is obtained.

The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday approved US$7.4 billion to pay for the medical bills of workers sickened or injured by the September 11, 2001 attacks (9/11 attacks) on the World Trade Center in New York City, New York. The bill was passed by a vote of 268–160. Thirteen Republicans joined the Democrats in supporting the bill, while three Democrats opposed the measure. Similar legislation is pending in the US Senate.

“Let’s not have any more people die because of the attacks of 9/11,” said Representative Anthony Weiner, a Democrat from New York.

The bill, which will provide free health care to 9/11 workers, will be paid for by ending tax breaks for foreign corporations, was fiercely debated on the House floor, with Democratic backers of the bill proclaiming that they stood for 9/11 heroes and victims. Republicans against the bill argued that it was an entitlement program for New Yorkers and that it was another example of bloated government. “There is no excuse for this kind of legislation,” argued Texan Republican representative Lamar Smith.

The Republicans offered an alternative that would reduce funding for 9/11 workers and pay for the remainder by cutting parts of a major health care bill passed earlier this year. This measure failed 185–244.

Potty training dolls for boys don’t get searched for online as much as potty training dolls for girls.

That’s too bad, because toilet training dolls are a terrific potty training aid when you are teaching your toddler new bathroom skills.

I have trained two sons of my own in potty skills and I’ve found that it’s not the doll that matters to little boys – it’s the team effort. Here’s what I mean.

– Potty dolls are an instant companion for your child. He now has a friend to play this new potty game with. Someone to talk to about the whole thing. To stop playing and go with him each and every time Mom, the timer, or his body says “time to go potty”. He also has someone to vent to when he’s tired of playing this game, but Mom says “keep going.”

Don’t underestimate this, by the way. As a parent, I often used my kids’ toys to my advantage.

Me: “you’re tired of using the potty, huh? Have you talked to ____ (potty doll) about this? I wonder what he thinks.”

I often got some pretty insightful comments out of my sons using this strategy. It helped them articulate to me what they were thinking and allowed me to address their concerns without being too confrontational.

After all, we were just talking to the doll.

– Training dolls, well, they train. If you choose an actual potty training doll that takes in liquid and pees that liquid out again, your son can see firsthand how this process works and what is expected of him.

Even if you opt to not use a traditional potty doll, you can use any favorite “friend” of your son’s to make the same important training points.

This is where the concept of a potty doll can really shine with your little boy, but with a little twist.

Are you ready?

Action figures need to learn how to use the potty. Really.

Some little guys really like having a smaller version of them self to potty train with. For these boys, a traditional potty training doll works great.

But that may not be your little guy. So think outside the box just a tiny bit. Action figures are tough characters that some toddlers love to emulate.

Then think tough-guy potty training.

The upside of action figure potty training is that you can carry several in your purse and always have a “man” ready to go into action. Your son will find being responsible for his action figure may help in getting over potty training hurdles.

Maybe your child is not interested in action figures or dolls. That’s fine. Does he have a favorite stuffed animal? Bingo! The nice thing about most stuffed animals is that they’re big enough to wear a pair of big boy undies. This is an easy way to keep your training indirect, at least part of the time, and not trigger so many frustrations.

Mom: “has Teddy Bear been to the potty since we woke up from a nap? You take him to the potty chair and help him. Don’t forget to go potty yourself so Teddy knows you are both big boys.”

Child: “Okay, but I better go first so he’ll know what to do, Mom.”

Potty training dolls for boys are an extremely useful tool, especially if you think creatively. Help your child use his imagination in this positive way and you create an opportunity for him to be a responsible part of the toilet training process.

An Indian all-female United Nations peacekeeping unit has arrived in Liberia, the first such team to be sent on a foreign mission.

More than a hundred female officers and about 20 men engaged in logistics work flew into Liberia on January 30, where they will receive additional training before starting their mission to strengthen the rule of law and maintain peace in the country. U.N. officials hope an all-female unit can inspire and help Liberian women.

Last year, Liberia elected Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as the first female head of state in Africa after two civil wars in the 1990s devastated the country, displacing hundreds of thousands of people. The country now has to rebuild its basic infrastructure and economy as well as come to terms with the violence of the civil wars.

We hope that the presence of this all-female contingent will serve as an incentive and an attraction to encourage young Liberian women to join the Liberian National Police

Commanding officer of the unit, Seema Dhundia told reporters that the attention her unit has received makes her “a bit apprehensive because now we have to exert more to prove our worth, to prove ourselves,”

Eighty-two female U.N. police officers currently serve in Liberia, as part of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

The UNMIL Police Commissioner Mohammed Alhassan hoped that the all-female contingent will serve “as an incentive and an attraction to encourage young Liberian women to join the Liberian National Police”.

The team has served before in troubled areas in central India and Kashmir. Dhundia herself has been a peace-keeper for 19 years and says her team are well trained and experienced and will be able to handle the situation.

A U.N. spokesman viewed the role of the all-female unit to not be particularly different from that of the Jordanian, Nepalese and Nigerian units that have been working in the country. The armed unit is to specialize in controlling difficult crowd situations.

“We hope that the presence of this all-female contingent will serve as an incentive and an attraction to encourage young Liberian women to join the Liberian National Police,” said UNMIL Police Commissioner Mohammed Alhassan. The U.N. has set up a special education programme to help women join the police force.

Hopes have been high that the presence of the all-female contingent will encourage victims of rape – which is rampant in the country – to report the crime and that it will make more women interested in becoming police officers and peacekeepers.

U.N. peace-keepers have also been accused of sexual exploitation in the past, and Joanna Foster, the gender adviser to the UN Mission told BBC News that missions employing more women had reported fewer such problems.

The first comprehensive global study of sexual behaviour, published today as part of The Lancet’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Online Series, found that people aren’t losing their virginity at ever younger ages, married people have the most sex, and there is no firm link between promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases.

Experts say data gleaned from the study will be useful not only in dispelling popular myths about sexual behaviour, but in shaping policies that will help improve sexual health across the world. Researchers looked at previously published studies on sexual behaviour in the last decade.

Professor Kaye Wellings, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicines, and her colleagues analysed data on sexual behaviour in the last decade from 59 countries.

The report also shows no support for the common notion that there is a culture of multiple sexual partners in countries with poor sexual health. Multiple sexual partners, it turns out, are more common in industrialised than in developing nations.

The study also found that contrary to popular belief, sexual activity is not starting earlier. Nearly everywhere, men and women have their first sexual experiences in their late teens; from 15 to 19 years old — with generally younger ages for women than for men, especially in developing countries.

“A single woman is more able to negotiate safe sex in certain circumstances than a married woman,” said Paul van Look, director of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organisation, who was unconnected to the study and points out that “married women in Africa and Asia are often threatened by unfaithful husbands who frequent prostitutes”.

There is much greater equality between women and men with regard to the number of sexual partners in rich countries than in poor countries, the study found. This imbalance has significant public health implications. Because of the diversity of sexual habits worldwide, Wellings warns that no single approach to sexual health will work everywhere. “There are very different economic, religious and social rules governing sexual conduct across the world,” Wellings said.

For example, men and women in Australia, Britain, France and the United States tend to have an almost equal number of sexual partners. In contrast, in Cameroon, Haiti, and Kenya, men tend to have multiple partners while women tend only to have one.

Along with other industrialised countries, Australia was one in which having two or more sexual partners in the past year was comparatively common.

Single men and women in Africa were fairly sexually inactive: only two-thirds of them reported recent sexual activity, compared with three-quarters of their counterparts in developed countries.

In what researchers said was proof the sexual double standard was still strong, more men than women reported having more than one partner.

“These findings beg the question of who the men are having sex with,” they wrote.

Italy had one of the lowest percentages of men who had sex before age 15 (4 per cent), compared to 18 per cent in the United States and 30 per cent in Brazil and the Dominican Republic. The researchers said early initiation was more likely to be non-consensual, unsafe and generally to be regretted later.

The study suggests that unequal treatment of girls and women as the major sexual-health issue.

The researchers call for providing sexual health services to unmarried young women, supplying condoms, decriminalizing commercial sex and homosexual sex, and prosecuting the perpetrators of sexual violence.

Experts say data gleaned from the study will be useful not only in dispelling popular myths about sexual behaviour, but in shaping policies that will help improve sexual health across the world.

“There’s a misperception that there’s a great deal of promiscuity in Africa, which is one of the potential reasons for HIV/AIDS spreading so rapidly,” said van Look

Fewer than half of unmarried non-virgins reported having sex in the past month.

Some of the major findings the survey found were:

 • School-based sexual education delays and does not hasten onset of sexual activity.
 • First sexual experience is often forced or sold.
 • Marriage is no safeguard of sexual health. It is more difficult for married women to negotiate safe sex and condom use than it is for single women.
 • Condom use is increasing, but condom-use rates remain low in many developing countries.
 • Among girls who marry at a very young age, “very early sexual experience within marriage can be coercive and traumatic.”
 • While there is no major trend toward earlier sexual experience, a trend toward later marriage has led to an increase in premarital sex.
 • Public health measures to improve sexual health should focus not only on individual behaviours but also on broader issues such as gender, poverty, and mobility.
 • Public-health messages intended to reduce sexual risk-taking “should respect diversity and preserve choice.”
 • Monogamy is the dominant pattern in most parts of the world. Men report more multiple partnerships than do women. Such men are more likely to live in developed nations.

Local Law enforcement officials acting on behalf of the European Commission raided offices of Intel and several computer makers this morning, a spokesman for the EU said. He did not specify which countries or which other firms were involved. However, a spokesman for Intel Germany, Hans-Jürgen Werner, said that Intel’s offices in Munich and Swindon were among those searched.

It emerged on Wednesday 13th, that raids also took place at Intel’s facility in County Kildare, Ireland in relation to the firms anti-competitive business practices. Intel employs over 5,000 people at its Irish manufacturing facility.

The raids are most likely connected to an ongoing anti-trust investigation against Intel by the EU. It is alleged that the company used its market dominance to bully its clients into buying its chips instead of AMD ones. Intel is denying the allegations.

As you may or may not know there are many individuals in the medical, dental, vision and other medical associated fields that swear by the usage of scrubs. Scrubs very closely resemble sweats in format but they are made out of a different fabric so they are lighter in weight which makes them much easier to work in. The scrub uniform consists of a top and bottom but there are so many variations that you can stand two people wearing scrubs next to each other and they can look very differently. The scrub is the single most popular garment to wear if you are in these professions.

The scrub originated with surgeons. It was the outfit that they changed into just before they were to go into the scrub room to wash their hands. This is where the term originally came from. For many years surgeons were the primary group of medical professionals that wore the scrub uniform. This spread to the assistants in the surgery room including the nurses and technicians. Eventually anyone that had any reason to go into a surgical room during a surgery would put on scrubs first. This started the expansion of the uniform from the surgical ward to other wards.

Surgeons soon started to do their post-op rounds with a clean pair of scrubs on. Usually they did this because they were going to be back in surgery soon and they needed to be prepared. Sometimes it was just because they liked them more and they were more comfortable than lab coats. Soon medical personnel that supported the surgeries also started to wear scrubs such as the lab technicians and others. Eventually hospitals started to ease their dress code requirements and the scrub uniform became optional for many of the medical personnel at the facility.

As soon as hospitals started to allow the scrub uniform some of the doctors who had private practices began to allow their office staff to wear them as well and the scrub uniform began to appear in private practices. From there the use of the scrub mushroomed into just about every facet of the medical field and is now an accepted part of the dress code within almost all medical facilities. Although the traditional uniform is still worn or mandated by some, it is by far the minority amongst many of the job types you will run into at a medical facility.

The reason scrubs have taken off in popularity is because of their comfort and their functionality. You can do your job and feel good while you do it. For many people this is a win-win and not something they would easily give up. The ability to wear something that fits nice and loose, has lots of pockets for lots of things and can keep you cool or warm depending on the scrub uniform you are wearing is very beneficial to many. The scrub has been around for a very long time and with its new found fashion statement they are probably not going anywhere for a long long time to come.

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.
