5 Places to Consider Retiring in Florida

by

Chatter Buzz

Florida has long been a popular destination to retire. With warm climate year-round climate, no state income tax, and lots of activities, it s no wonder Florida appeals to many retirees.

According to the National Association of Realtors , the median home price in February 2014 in the US was $164,000. During that same period in Florida it was $154,000, according to Zillow.com.

There are many places to choose from in Florida, depending on your interests. Here are five areas to consider for your ideal retirement location.

1. Treasure Coast – The Treasure Coast is made up of Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties. This area includes the cities of Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, and Sebastian. There are beautiful, pristine beaches here and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Homes are affordable and you ll find many restaurants, shops, and businesses in the area. The Treasure Coast is close to Miami, Daytona, and Orlando, but doesn t have the population or traffic of these large cities. This area is a desirable place to live for people of all ages.

2. Gulf Coast – The Gulf Coast of Florida has long been popular with retirees, especially around the cities of Tampa and Venice. Watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico while you relax on one of the many miles of white, sandy beaches. Houses are affordable, and you can enjoy amenities like golf or watching professional baseball with the Tampa Bay Rays. More than a third of the population in this area is over the age of 50, so you ll meet plenty of other retirees.

3. Southeast Florida – For a fast pace of life, consider Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach counties. This area includes the cities of Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Here you ll find restaurants, shows, museums, shopping, and night life. It s also a great place to live if you like to travel, with three international airports in the area. However, the area has a lot of traffic due to the dense population, and cost of a home is much higher than average for the state.

4. Central Florida – Orlando and its surrounding areas are home to businesses, universities, major theme parks, and a thriving tourist industry. This is one of the few areas in Florida that isn t on the coast, though you re only about few hours away from the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Central Florida has affordable homes and plenty to do, so you won t be bored, even without a beach nearby.

5. Florida Panhandle – Northwest Florida includes the cities of Tallahassee, Panama City, and Pensacola. This area is popular due to its beautiful beaches and proximity to Georgia and Alabama. Although the weather is still mild, the northern part of the state does experience a change of seasons. The Panhandle is one of the least populated areas in Florida, and is ideal for those who like country living.

No matter how you picture your retirement, there s a place for you in Florida. If you are interested in purchasing a home, visit Weichert Hallmark\’s Vero Beach Real Estate Agency website to view our current listings or call us at (800) 409-7368.

Jamie Lee Curtis, 47, has stated that she will end her acting career, but said that she will continue writing.

“I’m not an actor anymore,” she told Access Hollywood host Nancy O’Dell. “I really don’t imagine I’ll do that again.” She later said in the conversation, “I’m just focused on my family and just can’t imagine anything that’s going to pull me away from them right now.”

Curtis appeared on the Access Hollywood show to promote her newest children’s book, Is There a Human Race?. The interview she participated in with O’Dell will appear on the show’s weekend episode.

The picture book writer had this to say about ending her acting career, “No. I don’t want to be somebody else anymore.”

The last film Curtis starred in was the 2005 film The Kid & I.

Former U.S. Chief Justice William Rehnquist suffered paranoid delusions in 1981 during withdrawal from a dependence on prescription painkillers, according to his recently-released FBI file.

The late head of the U.S.’s top court began taking the drug Placidyl in the early 1970s for insomnia and back pain while he was an associate Supreme Court justice. His dependence on the drug was first made public when he was hospitalized for symptoms related to it in 1981, but the delusions were only revealed in the release of the file this week.

A doctor who treated Rehnquist told an FBI investigator the justice had “bizarre ideas and outrageous thoughts. He imagined, for example, that there was a CIA plot against him.” Another doctor said Rehnquist “had also gone to the lobby in his pajamas in order to try to escape.”

Rehnquist had been taking nearly three times the recommended maximum daily dosage of the drug. His delusions came when doctors at George Washington University Hospital took him off it. Eventually, they put him back on Placidyl and weaned him off slowly until he was cured of his dependence.

The FBI conducted an extensive investigation into Rehnquist’s drug dependence at the request of the Senate Judiciary Committee during his 1986 confirmation hearings to become chief justice.

Rehnquist’s file was released to media and lawyers this week as part of a public records request. Rehnquist died in September 2005 and because his privacy could no longer be violated, the FBI OK’d its release.

The FBI was also asked to investigate Democrats who were set to testify against Rehnquist at the 1986 hearing, the file showed. The Democrats were set to testify Rehnquist intimidated minority voters in the early 1960s as a Republican Party official in Arizona.

It’s not clear if the bureau ever did investigate the Democrats, however a memo in the file shows then-Assistant Attorney General John Bolton, the most-recent United Nations Ambassador for the U.S., approved the investigation and said he would “accept responsibility should concerns be raised about the role of the FBI.”

Rehnquist first took his seat as associate justice in 1972 and served on the court until his death.

Orchids are very refreshing flowers to look at, hence they are very popular to use as orchid wedding bouquets. They come in various colors and shapes so a bride-to-be can have a variety of choices. Their natural beauty and charm complement well with a bride’s appearance. It’s no secret that orchids can be quite expensive so if you want to save some money from all the costly preparations for a wedding, well, you can actually create your own wedding bouquet. Silk orchids are good to use, especially when making a cascading bouquet. Other popular orchid types are Cymbidium orchid, which is a bit heavier compared to others and comes best in white, pink, green, yellow and burgundy colors; Phalaenopsis orchid which is usually used for cascade bouquets because of its flat features and look best in white and purple colors; Vanda orchids which have smaller sizes but still look great as bridal bouquet; and Dendrobium orchids which have beautiful lines and small flowers.

Here is a simple guideline in making orchid wedding bouquets for your most precious day, your wedding day:

1) Put some heavy stones in a vase halfway through. This is where you will place your bouquet while you are arranging it so that you can use both of your hands. Then, put the foam bouquet holder in position inside the vase.

2) Cut off the leaves and flowers from the stalk to separate them. Start creating stems by taping a florist wire to the base of the flowers and leaves. Be sure to use a florist tape in the taping process and a florist wire. Cover the entire wire with green florist tape which will then look like a stem. The length of the orchid stems should vary from four inches to fourteen inches.

3) Next, insert the leaves unto the foam to frame the bouquet. This will make the primary shape of your orchid bouquet. Let the longest leaf hang down straight at the center and the remaining leaves should progressively and uniformly get shorter. The green foliage must point outwards in all directions. The green stem made from florist tape can be secured to the foam using hot glue.

4) Now, you can add each orchid flower to the bouquet one by one. The orchids with long stems should be inserted first with the longest one inserted at the middle bottom portion of the foam. This will serve as the bouquet’s anchor. Place two long stems away from the center, the next one in the center and two other ones off center again. The bouquet’s bottom will be built by this. Then, start building the fuller portion of your bouquet. Insert orchids with the length of five inches to seven inches. The shorter ones with length of three to five inches should be at the center. To create a full bouquet, place these orchids in the foam. Hot glue can be used for stability.

5) To finish the process, you can wrap a matching ribbon around the bouquet holder which complement with the theme of your wedding and the color of the orchids. The wedding bouquet would look simply perfect if it fits excellently to the theme. You can also add up smaller orchids to fill the bouquet.

For additional care for your orchids, you can soak them in a solution with preservative to lengthen their life and make them look fresh all throughout your wedding day.

Becky Zerlentes, 34, died on Sunday, April 3 in what was to be her last boxing match before retirement. The match, a Colorado State Golden Gloves bout, was held in Denver on April 2. Her opponent for the senior women’s title in that match was Heather Schmitz, 32.

Zerlentes received a knockout punch in the third round by a straight blow to her left temple. She received immediate attention from ringside physicians, but never regained consciousness, even after being admitted to Denver General Hospital for emergency surgery on Saturday night. She expired on Sunday due to blunt-force trauma injuries received to the head, resulting in a blood clot on the brain.

Her opponent Heather Schmitz met with reporters and expressed her regret, saying, “I didn’t want to hurt her. I feel very bad about that.”

“Nobody thought it was a very hard blow,” said Jeanne DePriest, manager of Zerlentes’ team. “We’ve been talking to people all day trying to find out what happened.” Zerlentes was wearing her required protective headgear at the time of the accident.

Several commentators have remarked on the coincidental similarities between Zerlentes’ death and the events depicted in the recent Oscar-winning film, Million Dollar Baby, in which a character becomes quadriplegic as a result of a spinal cord injury suffered during her last fight.

USA Boxing oversees the sport of amateur, Olympic-style boxing in America, as a member organization of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA). The non-profit organization has overseen men’s amateur boxing since 1888, but has only admitted women to the sport since 1993. There are currently 2,200 registered women boxers, according to USA Boxing, and interest in the sport is increasing.

“The USA Boxing family’s thoughts and prayers go out to Becky’s family and husband. We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said Sandy Martinez-Pino, president of USA Boxing.

In the aftermath of Zerlentes’ tragic death, the USA Boxing authorities have continued to affirm their high level of safety precautions and close oversight of the sport’s conditions and equipment. According to their website, amateur boxing was ranked 23rd in rate of injuries, behind soccer and gymnastics (National Safety Council, 1996) and 8th in rate of sports-related fatalities, behind football and scuba diving (Boxing and Medicine, Human Kinetics Illinois, 1995).

Zerlentes had an amateur record of 6-4 (6 wins to 4 losses), and was a former regional boxing champion with several brown belts in martial arts. She had a PhD in Geography from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and was an Adjunct Instructor in geography at Front Range Community College in Colorado. She is survived by a husband and family.

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

Electronic Gaming Monthly is now dead. EGM was one issue away from its 20th anniversary in February 2009. An internal email leaked to industry website Gamasutra on Tuesday revealed that EGM was to be closed following the acquisition of the online element of the 1UP network by competitor Hearst Corporation‘s UGO Entertainment and that the January 2009 issue (with Wolverine on the cover) would be the final printed issue of the iconic magazine. Ziff Davis‘s sale, brokered by GCA Savvian Advisors also includes Mycheats.com, Gametab.com, and GameVideos.com. Hearst Interactive is the owner and operator of UGO Entertainment.

According to CEO Jason Young, the court proceedings help Ziff Davis “pay down debt and shift our full focus to our core PCMag Digital Network Business.” Davis had been focusing on PCMag Digital Network. As a result, around 30 employees of Ziff Davis’ Game Group, including EGM Magazine’s staff, 1UP Network’s web staff, podcast and video producers lost their jobs. A UGO spokesman explained that “the reality is that UGO Entertainment is saving over 25 jobs, the company is retaining a core group of editorial all-star performers.” Ziff Davis Holdings Inc (ZFDH.PK), which publishes EGM and about 15 Web sites, obtained Manhattan, New York Court Judge Burton Lifland’s approval of a reorganization plan under Chapter 11, Title 11, United States Code. It was able, therefore, to emerge from its duly filed March bankruptcy protection petition.

UGO Entertainment CEO J Moses left a note on EGM’s gaming legacy, saying, “since we started UGO 11 years ago, we have served the gamer community and built a world-class online publishing platform.” Ziff Davis Media CEO Jason Young further noted: “We believe this is a smart transaction for Ziff Davis Media that places these market leading assets and teams in a great environment poised for further success. The transaction allows us to pay down debt and shift our full focus to our core PCMag Digital Network business. We thank our 1UP team members for their contributions and wish them the best of success into the future.” In July 2007, Hearst acquired the 11-year-old UGO Networks (Hearst Interactive) for an estimated price of $100 million. Established in 1998 by CEO J Moses, UGO is an online site targeting men aged 18 to 34.

J Moses stated categorically that his company just saved 1UP and UGO never tried to acquire EGM. “Closing EGM has absolutely nothing to do with UGO. We have just hired 24 people and have expanded UGO by 33 percent, because our business is robust and growing. We only wanted to buy 1UP and related sites. That was our interest as a dot-com company and that’s all we’ve ever been for 11 years.” Sam Kennedy, editorial director of 1UP, further explained that Ziff Davis was insolvent and 1UP was not financially healthy. “The reality of the market was that no company, including UGO, was willing to sustain 1UP as it was so the cuts were very painful but necessary to the survival of 1UP,” he added.

Electronic Gaming Monthly, which has been synonymous to video games for generations of gamers, was an American consumer video game magazine mainstay. It was published by Ziff Davis as part of the 1UP Network and released 12 issues a year (and an occasional extra “13th” issue for the Christmas season, also known as the “Smarch” issue, a reference to an episode of The Simpsons). As ZD’s sole print magazine, EGM, a stalwart of the videogame industry and dubbed the New York Times of games journalism, has been losing money. The 20-year-old publication had 236 issues total, since its debut in 1989.

In 2008, the company closed 27-year Games for Windows Magazine, or Computer Gaming World. In late 2006, Ziff-Davis also shuttered its Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, while its Xbox-focused XBN and Electronics Boutique in-store mag GMR were terminated in 2004. EGM’s February issue, which is completed, will only be available digitally. Print publications have been suffering for years now, due to the global economic meltdown.

File:Student’s giving exam.jpg

Only 44.47 percent of Romanian high school students passed last week’s 2011 baccalaureate exam, according to the results published by Romanian education authorities on Sunday. The baccalaureate exam in Romania is the secondary school educational qualification test, and passing it attests that a student has graduated high school and may be admitted to a university. This is dramatically different from 69.3 percent last year and 81.4 percent in 2009.

The moment of truth has come. Success rates topping 80 percent were not possible. We were simply deluding ourselves.

Sunday’s passing figures are a record low since the exam was introduced in Romania and comes after new anti-fraud measures cut back on student cheating. These included installing cameras in examination centres and forbidding students from paying teachers to obtain higher scores. For this exam, 665 high school students were caught cheating, double the number from last year, and at one high school it was found that the exam answers were given to 111 pupils prior to the exam.

Caras Severin County reported the lowest rate with 24.82 percent graduation, and Suceava reported the highest with 65.03 percent, down from 87.39 percent in 2010. In Bucharest the rate was 42.03 percent, the lowest since the 1989 revolution.

The release of the results started a national debate on the possible causes of the drastic drop in scores, from the failure of parental participation, poor teacher pay and pay cuts, to student disinterest and lack of motivation. Critics say the educational system depends on rote learning and students are not taught to think independently. Students say the school curriculum is boring and out-of-date.

At a press conference on Monday, Education minister Daniel Funeriu said, “These results are a mirror of our society. Romania is now at a crossroads…The nation should choose to encourage people who like to work rather than those who prefer cheating”.

Cristian Alexandrescu, chief education inspector for Bucharest, argued that the exam was not taken seriously by students and the results prove that a student cannot obtain a diploma without effort.

“The moment of truth has come,” Liliana Romanciuc, a school inspector in north-eastern Romania, told Mediafax. “Success rates topping 80 percent were not possible. We were simply deluding ourselves.”
