Hard contact lenses, also known as rigid or gas permeable contacts, are one of the main types of contact lenses. Wearing rigid contact lenses will usually result in clearer vision and are more resistant to protein and other deposits than soft contacts. The greater resistance to debris and foreign bodies makes them easier to clean, and they tend to last quite a bit longer than a soft contact lens. One thing that soft contacts offer over a rigid contact lens is comfort. Hard contact lenses are generally thought of as less comfortable than soft lenses, and this fact is usually addressed in the overall care procedure. Just as with a soft contact lens, it is very important to follow the care instructions closely for rigid contacts to avoid eye infections.

Typically, your eye care expert will recommend a specific care protocol for your rigid contact lenses. It s important that you follow their instructions without any improvisation, to keep your contacts in good condition and your eyes healthy. After each time you wear your rigid contact lenses, wash your hands very well and dry them off with a lint-free towel to prevent any pieces of fabric getting on the lenses. Remove your right contact lens from your eye and set it in your palm. Apply a few drops of your cleaning solution, according to the instructions, then rub the contact lens gently with a back and forth motion. Once that s done, rinse the lens with solution, rub it with your index finger and rinse it one more time. Place your contact lens in the case and fill it with fresh solution, then repeat the entire process with the left contact lens. It s important not to rinse off your contacts with water or saliva, as bacteria can get on the contact lens and cause eye problems. Use the solution recommended to you and nothing else.

If you seem to experience protein deposits on your rigid contacts, you may be advised to use an enzymatic cleaner once a week or so to help keep them clear. Don t use it unless your eye care professional has recommended it. If you suffer from dry eyes, which are more likely with rigid contacts, you may want to use a rewetting solution during the day to keep them lubricated. Dry eyes can really put a damper on your day and make wearing contacts quite unenjoyable, so be sure to use a rewetting solution if your eyes are dry from hard contact lens use.

It s also important to keep your contact lens case clean and disinfected. Every time you use the case, rinse it out with solution and then let it air dry. Some people use water to clean out the case, but many eye care professionals advise against it, suggesting solution instead. Many eye doctors also recommend replacing your rigid lens case with a new one every three months to prevent bacteria from contaminating your contacts. Take proper care of your rigid contact lenses, and you ll have a comfortable contact lens experience and healthy eyes.

President Bush has asked Congress to discuss the option of allowing him to deploy military resources if avian flu breaks out in America.

“I’m concerned about what an avian flu outbreak could mean for the United States and the world,” said the president in a conference today. The president also expressed concern that local response would be slow, given the precedent provided by the recent gulf coast hurricane disasters, the aftermath of which has triggered widespread criticism for what many view as instances of long-delayed and inadequate delivery on the part of the white house and congress. “I want there to be a robust discussion about the best way for the federal government, in certain extreme circumstances, to be able to rally assets for the good of the people,” the President said previously.

Avian flu is not currently able to easily pass from human to human, limiting epidemics. The president and others warn that the virus may mutate into a form that more easily spreads through social contact.

Today, Wales extended the prohibition on smoking at hospitals, schools, and playgrounds, with violators to face a £100 fine. Wales is the first of the UK nations to introduce this ban.

This is in addition to various restrictions on the practice, including a ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces in place since 2007 and a ban on smoking in cars with children in place since 2015.

The Welsh government, governed by left-wing party Welsh Labour, said the measure was to discourage adults and children alike from smoking by making it appear less normal, and encourage the already partaking to quit.

Two hospitals in the country’s south have installed a button-activated speaker system to remind people hospitals are smoke-free. In 2016, a similar mechanism was tried at hospitals across Wales, where an announcement recorded by local school children would play upon pressing a button.

Minister for Mental Health, Wellbeing, and the Welsh Language Eluned Morgan said she was “immensely proud to have brought into force this law”, and “[t]his legislation will benefit the health of future generations in Wales, as fewer children will be exposed to smoking”. She concluded, “[w]e need to do everything we can to combat the harmful effects of smoking.”

The government was criticised by many smokers rights groups. Simon Clark, Director of the Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco compared the law to “taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut”, saying: “There is no evidence that smoking in the open air poses a risk to anyone else’s health, including children.” The director further explained, “Banning smoking on hospital grounds is particularly unjust because it targets smokers who may be stressed and in need of a comforting cigarette. Most smokers use their common sense and don’t smoke around small children. They don’t need politicians telling them how to behave.”

Wikinews contacted Eluned Morgan’s office to know more about this ban.

First Active has become the first financial institution to offer 100% mortgages in the Republic of Ireland. The bank previously offered 100% financing to professionals in finance and medicine, but is now to offer this product to anyone who can afford to meet the repayments.

The development is a huge boost for first time home buyers who have been struggling to get on the Irish property market in recent years due to the rapid increase in house prices. A typical first time buyer in Dublin with 92% financing would normally have to put down a deposit of €20,000-€30,000 in cash, but now have the option to produce no deposit.

First Active has said that 100% mortgages will be available across its entire range of mortgage products.

Note however that this is not necessarily an entirely positive development.

The United States and most of Europe have experienced a housing price bubble in recent years. A bubble occurs when buyers purchase a property not because its price is appropriate for its actual value but because they expect the price to significantly rise in the short term permitting resale with a profit.

In other words, the prices people pay for properties becomes divorced from the real value of the property; the purchase is speculative and depends purely upon the expectation that people will continue to buy properties in this way (e.g. without proper consideration of their real value).

The terrible weakness in this is that when the market corrects itself and prices fall to a level where properties are being priced at their actual realistic value, anyone holding a property loses a great deal of money, since the price they paid does not reflect the actual realistic value of the property.

This kind of shock to the housing market is extremely undesirable. Significant write downs in the value of property often significantly depress the economy as a whole.

Less than 100% mortgages force buyers to invest a significant amount of money in the act of purchasing their house, which tends to discourage purely speculative purchasing, thus helping to mediate house price bubbles.

With 100% financing, anyone who can meet repayments can speculatively purchase a property. This naturally encourages pricing bubbles.

24 Hour Restaurants Are Not Just For Party Animals

by

Antoine Adelais

24 hour food is great if you are just coming in for a night on the town, but who else can it benefit? There are many people who can benefit from late-night snacks so please read on to learn more.

Truck Drivers

Truck drivers, or truckers, are limited by law to only drive 11 consecutive hours per day, but many exceed that. Even 9 hours on the road, however, can be extremely tiring because remaining mentally sharp while sitting in a sedentary position can be quite difficult. 24 hour food is a great way for truck drivers to stop, take a break and refresh themselves after a long stretch on the road. Not only will the calories in the food provide energy for the driver, but a cup of coffee should help him stay awake for the rest of the trip.

Night Shift Workers

Just because someone works at night does not mean that they should not be allowed to pay for a nice hot meal. There are a tremendous amount of night shift workers out there that you probably are not aware of like: nurses, doctors, police officers, bartenders, restaurant servers, security guards and more. When these people get off of work they are not always willing and able to cook and meal on their own so they seek out 24 hour food. Late-night food is a great way for these workers to socialize after work when everything else is closed or to have a nice hot meal before bed time.

College Students

If you have ever studied for a final before, you know how draining it can be. 24 hour food providers give college students a lot more than food. An all-night diner can provide a place to take a quick break while eating your food, but also a place to keep the coffee coming while you are cramming for your test. If you cannot study at home then the diner is a good place as long as you can find a quiet corner to concentrate. Not only that, but it is scientifically proven that certain nutrients obtained from food can provide an increase in cognitive ability.

Night Owls

Never forget about the night owls, some of the biggest fans of 24/7 dining. Some people just prefer to stay up late, whether it is due to insomnia or simply a preference for the calmness of the night. If you are up late and you have roommates you probably cannot get away with cooking without upsetting them. The smells and the sounds will wake up your roommates without a doubt. Additionally, a lot of night owls are young people who simply have yet to learn how to cook, so they need these restaurants when they get hungry late at night.

Whether your late-night food craving can be attributed to intense post-work hunger, or simply boredom, 24/7 restaurants can benefit all of us.

United States —”IBM hereby commits not to assert any of the 500 U.S. patents listed below, as well as all counterparts of these patents issued in other countries, against the development, use or distribution of Open Source Software.” [1]

So begins the pledge IBM has made to “any individual, community, or company” writing or using software defined as “open source” by the Open Source Initiative (OSI).

The patents include software for text recognition and database management.[2]

“True innovation leadership is about more than just the numbers of patents granted. It’s about innovating to benefit customers, partners and society”, said Dr. John E. Kelly, IBM senior vice president, Technology and Intellectual Property. “Our pledge today is the beginning of a new era in how IBM will manage intellectual property.”[3]

“This is not a one-time event”, said Dr. Kelly. “While IBM will continue to demonstrate leadership in patent output, through measures such as today’s pledge, we will increasingly use patents to encourage and protect global innovation and interoperability through open standards and we urge others to do so as well.”

Lawrence Lessig, law professor at Stanford Law School and free software proponent commented: “This is exciting. It is IBM making good on its commitment to encourage a different kind of software development and recognizing the burden that patents can impose.”[4]

Not all are confident of IBM’s motives, though.

Florian Mueller, campaign manager of anti-patent website,NoSoftwarePatents.com, accused IBM of hypocrisy because of lobbying in the European Union to push through theComputer Implemented Inventions Directive.

“IBM is just being hypocritical because they want to appease the open source community and make themselves popular,” said Mueller.

“In Europe, IBM is a driving force behind the extension of the scope of patentability with respect to software. If IBM wants to assume the role of a post-Christmas benefactor, they’d better stop their aggressive patent lobbying in the EU and their shameless squeezing of small and medium-sized companies with its patent portfolio.” [5]

Do you knit and crochet during the summer months? It is one great divide we come across in crafting. Some people pack away their yarn projects as the barometer rises while others plan on taking their knitting to the beach. There is no reason whyknitting and crochet can’t be all year round activities but you may need to plan differently for the summer months. We have few tips on enjoyable yarn crafting for the summer months.Fibre choiceIf you are worried about getting sticky hands during the summer, choosing the fibres in your yarn carefully can make a big difference. Avoid hairier yarns like mohair or brushed yarns because there will eb more rubbing from the fibres as they pass through your hands making them hotter and potentially felting.

Instead choose your yarn as you do your summer clothes – other natural fibres such as cotton, linen and even bamboo are as good choices for knitting as wearing. These option are often very smooth so will slide through warmer hands more easily.

One thing to remember about cotton and similar yarns is they can stretch or drop because the smoother fibres don’t stick together as much as wool. So take time to make a swatch and wash it before you start.Yarn weightFiner yarns such as 4-ply and laceweight can be a good summer choice because there is less yarn actually going through your hands and your growing project is likely to be lighter and airier. A chunky wrap pooling in your lap in mid-summer is not that pleasant. However, be realistic – I’m not sure hand painted cashmere/silk laceweight and the beach really mix.

Needles and hooksWhat your knitting needlesand hooks are made of can make a difference in how warm your hands feel. If acrylic needles usually feel warm in your hands, they may not be your best choice for summer. Metal can warm up in the sun whereas wood and carbon fibre are less affected by external temperature. Pick needles that generally feel cool or comfortable in your hands. The other factor is how smoothly your stitches move on your needles. Some yarns will stick or slide more on different materials. You will find it more comfortable to choose needles where your stitches slide easily, reducing the chance of generating extra friction and heat.Smaller projectsAs mentioned above with the chunky wrap, a summer’s afternoon is not the best time to work on a man’s chunky jumper that will cover your lap with an insulating layer you really don’t need. Go for smaller and lightweight projects – socks can be a good choice. And the brighter summer light could be perfect for the lacy scarf you’ve been planning.Crocheters might think of making squares or other motifs that can be joined into a blanket in cooler times.Find a good crafting spotSome shade is your friend when it comes to summer knitting as is a light breeze, Find a good knitting spot and stick with it.And most important – enjoy your summer knitting and crochet.

At the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) conference, a resolution was passed that encourages the Government of Saskatchewan, Canada to place a moratorium on specialty livestock farms raising wild boar. All wild boars that have escaped to roam wild should be killed, according to the resolution.

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud endorses a ban on wild boar farming. The wild boar population is expanding exponentially. There are over 2,000 feral Sus scrofa swine roaming the prairies. Two litters of approximately 12 piglets are sired by each wild boar sow every year. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) likewise passed a similar resolution at their 79th annual convention to urge the Saskatchewan Government to declare the wild boar as a nuisance species which can be killed on sight.

3% of farmed “wild” boars escape. Cells of wild boars are ravenous creatures killing and eating everything in their path. Horses, cows, and other livestock run from wild boars, breaking through fences in the process.

Ostriches, emus, llamas, alpacas, reindeer, wild boar, and fallow deer were amongst the animals introduced to farms in Saskatchewan during the agricultural diversification program in the late 1970s. Production of wild boars was promoted throughout the 1980s.

According to the Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food 2001 statistics, there were 150 wild boar producers raising approximately 15,000 and 20,000 head. Of these there were about 2,700 sows. On the 2006 Census of Agriculture, 401 farms reported 4,926 boars.

The boar’s red meat is an export commodity to Europe and Asia. The live breeding stock are also sold to trophy hunt ranches. Full blooded wild boar and hybrid crosses are raised.

Macomb, New York Councilman Steve Burke took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Burke, an insurance adjuster and farmer, was elected councilman in Brookhaven, New York in 1979. He left the town after being accused and found not guilty of bribery in the 1980s. Since 1987 he has served as Macomb councilman off-and-on and currently holds the post. From 1993 to 1996 and 1999 to 2002 he worked as chairman of the Democratic Party of St. Lawrence County, New York. Among his many political campaigns, Burke unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1992 and recently attempted to run for U.S. Congress in 2014 but too many of his ballot petition signatures were found invalid. Burke filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in the 2016 election on September 18, 2015 and has qualified for the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire Primary.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Burke discusses his political background, his 2016 presidential campaign, and his policy proposals.
